't figure out what mr. romney so eloquently said in that debate. talking about politics of the 1% or the 47%, conservatives want the best for all folks, and yes, we mean thewe don't want them trapped in poverty. we want them married, paying their taxes -- host: we will get katrina vanden heuvel's response. guest: yeah. listen, if marriage will promote the well-being of the couple, children, great. but in my mind, it is and not just that. that is too simplistic. it is part of the equation. without good jobs, without ensuring that workers have rights and a time -- at the time when big business is so powerful, without doing small things that happened around this country but have taken too much effort, giving women, families early child care, the sense of a community coming together to lift up families, marriages not sufficient. to reduce it to that is too simplistic. no one is saying marriage isn't important. it is not the only a factor in building a family that is doing well. the fact that jobs to date are low-paying is a terrible problem, and i would link this to the poverty issue. we have a

portman, the one that plays president obama in the debate camp practice sessions. mitt romney is getting ready for the next session, next debate, hoping his mum carries over next week. >> john harwood is cnbc's chief washington correspondent. thanks for being here. i don't know if it's possible to strip politics away from these new unemployment numbers, but if you can, explain, does the president get credit for these numbers coming down, and how real are they? >> well, the president gets credit or blame for whatever the economic conditions are on his watch. these are numbers that are better than they've been, but they're still not good numbers. 7.8% is a high unemployment rate. we've got an economy that's not growing very fast. but it's certainly good news for the president to be able to say that 7.8%, the rate when i took office, we're back down there again. but i think people make too much political impact of these jobs numbers, because they don't need a government statistic to tell them how they feel about it. >> but then you have somebody influential like jack welch who tweets someth
that president obama and mitt romney are going to be debating. we have done she more debates left. at the end of the day, the person who comes out as the candidate most able to get america back on track in terms of jobs and getting people back to work, that candidate has the biggest advantage. on friday with the jobs number, present, we gained some of that advantage. i will not say the september numbers will be a game changer. but i do think we have some good news for the president. host: we are looking at the jobs figures that came out yesterday. we hear from the candidates who spoke yesterday. here is governor romney talking about the jobs numbers released. [video clip] >> there was a report that came out on jobs. there were fewer jobs created this month that last month. the unemployment rate has come down slowly, but it has come down. it is primarily due to the fact that more and more people have just stopped looking for work. if you just drop out of the work force and say, i cannot go back to work, i will stay home. you are no longer part of the employment statistics. it's the same share
